About the QuickBooks® for Contractors Bookkeeping Tips & Training website

Hi, I’m Nancy Smyth from Sunburst Software Solutions, Inc. and I’m the owner/creator of the QuickBooks® for Contractors Bookkeeping Tips & Training website.  I am a Certified QuickBooks® ProAdvisor, an Intuit™ Gold Developer, and have worked with thousands of commercial/government construction contractors since 1995.

QuickBooks® is an affordable, powerful and user-friendly accounting program, that when set up properly, can handle the books for just about any construction business.  But QuickBooks® is also a generic software program that is designed for use in any type of business.  When it can’t handle a certain portion or segment of your construction business, you must then look at learning advanced tips and techniques and/or 3rd party integrated applications that will fill those needs.

quickbooks training for contractorsI’ve worked with QuickBooks® since it first came out in the early 1990’s, specializing in the commercial construction industry when I had an active bookkeeping practice — and I’m amazed at how few resources, reference, or training materials there are for How to Use QuickBooks® in the Commercial/Government Construction Industry.  Over the years I’ve created many different QuickBooks training materials, initially for our customers, and added them to the Support Area of our main website; where unfortunately, they’ve become buried.  You’ll now find many of those same items showcased here on this website as they are updated and republished.

Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisorIn our experience, anyone can say that they “know” QuickBooks® – but when you start talking about prevailing wage, Certified Payroll, AIA Billing, retainage, weighted-average-overtime, getting equipment costs into job costing reports – you begin to see their eyes glaze over.  We deal with that everyday – even from many of the QuickBooks® Experts, however, it’s little wonder – construction is a broad term and there are a lot of different types of contractors and no one needs/wants to track the same things in the same manner.

The needs of a commercial/government construction contractor are quite unique and complex, especially if you perform work on government funded/prevailing wage construction projects.

We’ve talked with contractors who are frustrated with QuickBooks only to find that they aren’t utilizing many of the features that would provide them with the information that they were looking for.  Likewise, we’ve talked with contractors who have taken that step into purchasing new construction-specific software and only use the base features of it because it was too difficult to learn, ended up resenting their purchase and came back to QuickBooks.
